  1. This might be one of your best videos. As a school teacher I’ve learned some of these things on the job from de-escalating things in the playground.

  2. Trav,
Thank you for your emails. I studied Law a while back. This is definitely sound advise. Yes, I have colleagues who’s been arrested for defending them-self and even walking away. Police will arrest both parties. Once the truth is discovered; no criminal records; the police releases my colleague. But still who wants to spend 4-5 hours in the precinct. Again, thank you, excellent advise. AVJ

  3. Awesome video Trav! A very high level martial arts master was asked by a student “What is THE greatest martial art?” – his answer – ” Calibration BEFORE the incident “….Great wisdom here…….

  4. Self defense is NOT knocking out a couple of drunks at the bar🍻because you couldn’t keep your comments (or hands) to yourself. Most commonly, your hands and comments directed at some dude’s “lady”. NO, sometimes that’s just plain fun, BUT it is NOT self defense.
In fact, I’ve never seen a true defending of oneself in a bar, club, party or any place where the primary consumption is booze. In what other setting does a grown man respectively, ever hear taunts directed at him (or his damsel) that he would need to practice verbal jiu jitsu?? Just a thought.

Second, the content was great, the responses perfect, to be able to deescalate or redirect aggressive or just flat out assholishness behavior, not getting oneself in a situation to be hurt or get out of the threat as quickly as possible- that is self-defense.

(I do question his story of six years for throwing a single punch AFTER the assailant already attempted assault. What state are we in? What kind of a lawyer? There’s more to the story or the man had definite priors. But anyways it makes people pay attention.)

Cauliflower Ears and Felonies. My People.

I could continue with a story that allows me to chime in with resume, credentials, experience, like I remember when I taught this, or the time I trained that, or the moment I bravely competed in this other bullshit, or to look back with fondness to have fought on this card (or on this yard) …. or better yet name drop my insecurities like Rick Rufus, Ben Henderson, Carlos Farias, John Crouch, TAQUINO, Ryan Bader, Cyclone + Ismael Aoki, and countless blah blah blah-

    But only douchebags do that!

My point is: True Warriors, Protectors
    Real Fighters Fight Fighters

  5. If I’m not mistaken, that is Tim Tackett. He was (is?) a well known figure in the martial arts world from his xingyiquan and JKD background.

I met him in the 80’s and noted that he was a ‘hard man’; thus, this advice is even more meaningful, I think.

  6. This is really good!!! When I was growing up in Chicago, there is always one kid in school (kind of like Chris Tucker) that were masters at this. I am not sure if any of them knew this is what they were doing at the time but they never fail to end fights quickly before they begin with everyone becoming friends after. As adults, you will probably never become friends after this but, I have seen first hand that this does end fights before they start.
