I have to admit, that knock out looks brutal but a as many commented here, the video is too short and not always on the big guy and his family to see the overall threat level. That said, as many commented as well, this is a large group of teenagers and nowadays you never know how much of a threat a woman can be. There are most likely at least 3 woman on my street that are better trained in martial arts than I am, and would kick my ass… I’ve seen videos of big guys getting kicked in the face by woman and going down just as hard as this girl did.
I think that if I were him, and my family wasn’t around, I would have tried to just walk away.
In his situation though, I would beobably have ended up doing the same he did, maybe not after pushing her only once, but at some point I would have seen red and attacked instead of just defending. I’ve been in a similar situation and at some point adrenaline takes over and the level of aggression you build up goes beyond reason. This is triggered by fear for yourself and most of all for your family, so if that is how it went for him, who can blame him? Reacting to fear of what could happen to your small kid if you didn’t put a stop to the threat as quickly as possible, makes it very hard to control your strength and thoughts. You don’t have time nor the cool to think of a more gentle way to put an end to the threat.

Tbh it’s difficult to say. He definitely hit her too hard but as Trav said his whole family was also there in the same threatening position and the teenagers in the video were definitely way out of line and, as they were videoing it, likely to escalate to impress their friends.
Now let’s look at that escalation for a second…. would that girl punching him have hurt? Probably not. If she had been allowed to hit him might the other teens have joined in? Definitely.
If his wife and child had seen them attacking him would they have tried to intervene? Probably
Would the teens have attacked them as well. Definitely.
And how many of those teenagers were carrying (let’s face it this is a thing these days) and would they use it ……..

Proportional response is flawed, how do you as a victim respond if you just got killed or seriously incapacitated. It should be about credibility in victim’s mind of attacker’s intent & capability.
Or just make an attacker automatically lose their human rights as soon as they attack a victim. The victim automatically gains legal immunity at the same moment the attacker loses their rights. I bet that would stop random street crime.

I feel sorry for the guy. I really hope that a jury of adults with families hears the case. It looks bad, but supposing she had managed to incapacitate him by a karate kick to the balls? All the way with Big Guy on this. In fact, if he sets up a crowdfunder, he will get a contribution from me. We’ve all met stupid idiots like that girl in public spaces, and this guy’s done society a very big favour.
I think people would feel different if she was a young white girl…..
Then it would worse if she was white and the man was grown and black….

It’s really tough to make the call from a short, shaky video. It LOOKS really bad, though.
From what I can see, it looks completely disproportionate, but, I’m only seeing a small piece of the story.
He could have slipped the punches, smothered the punches, or just taken a punch. She was not about to knock him out. He did NOT need to knock her into next week.
I’m guessing he’s going to deeply regret that decision when his court date comes up.
