Islam Makhachev's Slick Foot Sweep

Maximum Takedown... Minimum Effort

  • What could the victim have done better Trav? I know it’s slow mo, but it would seem if you are reaching with a knee, in close quarters grasp, you would want to get your base back quickly. It seems like he just left himself hanging on one foot for a second too long(fatigue?). Still great for Makhachev to see the opportunity, and the follow through is impressive, but just wondering your thoughts if the victim could have avoided it.

    • Geez… it’s difficult to defend flawless timing. Perhaps if he had seen that this was one of Islam’s moves in the past, he could have realized that his arm was ‘trapped’ and kept his feet on the ground. But the thing is, as you get better at trapping arms and such, you get better at not giving it away. Islam might have held the wrist loosely, which wouldn’t attract attention. The only real choice here is not to throw the knee. He would have had to detect the impending set up before hand. Again, it’s just impossibly hard to defend a perfectly executed move.

  • Your point on developing “feel” is critical. Counter points of question this vs that tend to stay in the analytic side of the mind. Moving from the thinking part [which has a role] to the kinesthetic or feeling emphasis is a Great Point–thanks
