Travis…. I have to ask, if these guys are fighters then don’t they see the kick coming? It looks like they just don’t look or react, but let the other guy execute the kick without really evading or blocking. The dude is so tall and large it seems impossible not to see him move.
No one is used to strikes coming down vertically like that! Most of these guys are used to having their guard up, and that neutralizing the kick. Not so in this case!
Don’t people experience “tunnel vision” as a result of the adrenaline dump everyone experiences in a “real” fight? In my misspent youth and early adulthood, in the fights I got into, I always experienced this phenomenon as well as a rushing sound in my ears…
I always hoped that this would calm down a bit with experience… but I’m not sure if it does.
All roundhouses should be driven downward if you can afford the elevation, Aside from a spinning back kick, a double low-high sidekick-roundhouse, round-round, or the ultimate downward axe to high round is the most deceptive of progressive kicking tech. Check out the great quasi-combination at 2:18-2:20 where Feitosa drops a left downward axe kick and seemingly flows directly into his trademark left roundhouse, even though there was a second that was edit-replaced with a fade, the illusion was a great example of his legendary Kyokushin background.
