Here's a few lessons that I pulled from the most recent program I released on how to fight huge opponents... because I like to share stuff.

If you saw a video on YouTube and you want to see the second half or "follow-up", this would be the section to visit. It would seem that everyone got confused without a huge YouTube logo to click on... so here you go.

This is the best essential training equipment that I've found based on quality and price. Good equipment allows you to build your skills all by yourself, and any time that you want.

Here's some more advanced stuff, theoretically:

This striking section is a combination of boxing and kicboxing. I take the head movement, footwork, and angles from boxing and combine it with the kicks, knees, elbows, clinch, and brutality from kick boxing.

Jiu Jitsu is the art of fighting people on the ground. If a fight ends up on the ground, you will be happy if you have a few tricks up your sleeve, if nothing else. Snapping a joint, or choking someone to sleep is a GREAT way to win a fight.

Here's some other stuff:

Wrestling refers to the ability to take people to the ground when you need to... sometimes violently slamming them to the ground and doing some serious damage. The ability to control where a fight ends up can be very important.

This is our not-entirely-serious but actually-kind-of-effective series on how to pick up chicks... it's short... at least in the freeeeee section.

Over the years, I have documented the many martial art related ramblings of my mind in the form of newsletters, sent out every couple of weeks.  They are considered by some to be highly entertaining.

  4. Morning all, being an ex martial arts instructor I have to say congrats to Trav for this page. Sorry to say, there is so much rubbish out there on self-defense techniques and sadly too many folks that see this and think it will work. Being an engineer by profession it is like watching a you tube clip on how to build a bridge and suddenly all are construction engineers. Right? It taket a few years at school to become an engineer. And not everyone can be an engineer.
It will take you 3-4 yrs of regular training to get the knowledge and experience. Starting this voyage of yours by studying Trav’s techniques is a good start. It doesnt matter if you become a black-belt or not.

Right, having said that. I stopped training martial arts as I reached my mid 40s as I realized that my body isnt getting younger…. 28yrs of 10-12 hrs per week. DONT get me wrong, I DONT REGRET my training a bit, it does things to your body and mind that are good things.

I have just started to browse through these pages and I see a lot of good stuff that I wished I myself was tought as a beginner, but wasnt. I had to relearn a lot as I grow older and met more experienced people than me. Having said that:
    1) You have two things for free in life, you body and your mind. Train both. Mind by school , reading learningful stuff, excercise your mind.
Body you can train at home, no need for a gym. Just be sure you do it on a regular basis and that you train your entire body.
    2) You fight as you train.
If you that read this is an instructor yourself or is a more advanced martial arts student. Try to change your ordinarie dojo for a living room or move in some furniture in your dojo and practice the techniques there- things that work in the dojo usually dont work at all outside the dojo. Your self-defence situation will not take place in a dojo, right? Or, change the ordinary dojo class for a walk where you encourage your students to assess the environment by asking themself ”what if I where to be attacked here?” What stuff is there that I can use for a weapon? Holes in the ground that I can manourve my attacker into? Sticks? Stones? Garbage cans etc etc. Be aware of your environment. My back-pack, can I use that as a weapon?
    3) Sweat saves blood. AND as Trav points out, real fights are messy, they do NOT follow any rule book. The first thing you have to be aware of as you realize that you have to fight is : I will get bruised, I will get cut. BUT the other one will lose. IF you enter a fight with the assumption that: I will lose- you will lose.

Folks, enjoy life! There are plenty of good people out there for you to meet and places to explore. You only have one life, live it to the best of your capacity.

    All the very best,
    Per
