There’s no luck in that, other than the angle of the opponent’s head and neck when it landed. The kick was going to land on him somewhere, and guaranteed not to miss. If you’ve done thousands of reverse hook kicks (as I have), you already know the height and target on the opponent and won’t miss even by an inch. It’s a developed sense of knowing where that target is going to be in the 1/8th of a second after you take your eyes off of it. Worst case scenario he catches the arm instead of the head. That said, it looks almost certain he knew the backfist was setting up as soon as the opponent sidestepped to plant his feet.
