Breaking Up Fights

Newsletter - 2025

Someone recently asked me how I would break up a fight if I absolutely had to, so I whipped together this video to offer some thoughts.

But before you watch that... I have a story for you:

So you’re minding your business, enjoying a stroll on the sidewalk, when all of a sudden… a fight breaks out between two wiley young fellows.

Oh my!

Cell phone cameras are immediately whipped out, a 35 year old man yells “WORLDSTAR!,” as a nostalgic tear runs down his cheek, and the two combatants fling punches sloppy enough to flood their girlfriends with second hand embarrassment.

As a capable martial artist, you think to yourself, “Surely I should take this rare opportunity to flex my skills and save these two men… from….. each other… I guess…. right?!”

But as you begin to jog towards the altercation, new idea flashes into your mind!

You think to yourself, “Maybe…. JUST MAYBE… instead of involving myself in this fight, I should take 10 steps backwards and just punch myself... in the nuts... Repeatedly.”

Distracted by this way better idea, you do exactly that.

When the confused spectators slowly redirect their cameras and ask what the hell you’re doing, you can just tell them to MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS.

…which is exactly what you decided to do when this fight broke out… again, showing the true depths of your infinite wisdom.

There’s no good reason to break up a fair fight, especially between strangers.

Of course, if you’re a bouncer, it’s your job. You have to break up fights.

If someone is being beaten to death, heroism is always appreciated.

If a couple of hooligans have crashed your house party one of them is kneeling behind your guests while the other is hilariously pushing them over, surely they must be ejected... which admittedly is a different topic, but perhaps it has a similar solution.

So again, if you absolutely have to break up a fight and/or eject someone from the premesis, well... this video is for you.

Anyhow, we discuss a handful of things like:

1. How to break up a fight and quickly remove one combatant from the situation

2. When will you be charged for assault for involving yourself in a fight

3. When is it appropriate to choke someone to sleep?

4. What exactly happens when you choke someone to sleep?

5. How to not be jumped and / or soccer kicked when breaking up a fight

6. The morality interfering with a self defense scenario, and the ridiculous consequences

Nevertheless, it's not often that I make a video for the ol' newsletter, so by all means, check it out.

Here is yet another link that you can click in order to watch it.

May fortune favor you, my friend... and have fantastic day.
