A couple weeks back, I demanded that everyone choose a goal and do something to work towards accomplishing it. So...
1. What was your goal?
2. How are ya doin' with it?
Even if you're doing horribly, I'd like to hear about it. And if that's the case, what the heck is holding you back?
Take a moment for introspection, and let me know...
On the topic of martial arts:
I saw a fantastic knockout on Reddit the other day, and it made me think for a bit.
It's a marvelously timed spinning back elbow, and it puts a poor guy's 'lights' out immediately.
Have a look at the video... which I predict that you will watch at least 5 times.
So, I sat back and thought about how this must have been set up... after all, we can only see maybe 15 seconds of this fight, and the timing was flawless.
How can he possibly have timed such a perfect spinning back elbow?
Is this man living in The Matrix?
What I see is an opponent making HUGE entries.
The first Left / Right that the soon-to-be-flattened guy throws involves a MASSIVE forward movement; and he was probably doing that repeatedly.
(Even the size of your entries must be varied, lest you become predictable.)
On the second entry, our victor Rear-Slips, and then moves forward with a nasty spinning back elbow.
Based on the size of previous entries, he probably knew the guy would dive right into it.
Also, the guy entered with a spinning attack of his own!
The knockout itself was caused by a spinning back elbow, countering a spinning back-fist.
And guess what?!
That flashy spinning back-fist attempt made the guy a whole lot easier to knock out.
The strike that knocks you out is the one that you don't see coming!
If you don't SEE the strike, you can't BRACE for the strike.
Normally, you can tense your neck muscles. You can tuck your chin. You can clench your jaw.
These are all things that stabilize your head, and prevent your brain from sloshing violently into your skull wall.
If you're spinning, you can't see the strike.
Therefore, you can't BRACE for the strike.
So hey... cool knockout and all, but there are some very good reasons why taking your eyes off your opponent isn't necessarily worth the highlight reel knockout.
Maybe it is...
What do I know?
Enjoy your day, and let me know about your progress! (or lack thereof).
